Established in 2014, WETA plays a pivotal role in the development and preservation of an extensive network of trails in the West End.

Founded in the picturesque West End region of Colorado, the West End Trails Alliance (WETA) has been instrumental in creating recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts for the last decade.

WETA aims to foster a strong sense of community, bringing together hikers, bikers, runners, and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.

The mission of the West End Trail Alliance is to build world class trails, map an extensive network of backcountry trails, advocate for outdoor recreation in the West End, and foster respect and appreciation for the backcountry and public lands we enjoy.

WETA's commitment to providing outdoor recreational opportunities has welcomed adventurers from far and wide to explore the breathtaking landscapes of the West End.

By encouraging a love for the great outdoors and fostering a strong sense of stewardship among their members, WETA is preserving the trails for generations to come.

Our key areas of focus:

  • Mapping and classifying our extensive network of varied trails- single track, double track, abandoned mine roads and even old cow trails- the West End trail network is certainly unique!

  • Maintaining a select portion of our network through trail maintenance and signage projects.

  • Advocating for responsible and sustainable recreation access on public lands in the West End.

  • Supporting and listening to the local community in regards to trail initiatives, and making outdoor recreation opportunities more accessible for our local community.

  • Designing and building the Sawtooth and Naturita Flats, a new purpose built single track network.

A History of Community and Trails

Since 2014, the West End Trails Alliance (WETA) has been dedicated to promoting and developing non-motorized trails in the West End region of San Miguel and Montrose Counties. What began as a small group of cycling enthusiasts has grown into a thriving organization with a diverse membership and a significant impact on the local community.

Early Years (2014-2016):

  • Formation and Growth: WEBA (West End Bicycle Alliance) was formed in 2014 with the goal of advocating for safe cycling infrastructure.

  • Mapping and Membership: Initial efforts focused on mapping existing trails and attracting members.

  • Grant Funding: WETA secured significant funding from local organizations like the Telluride Foundation and San Miguel County.

  • Website and Map Development: The organization launched its website and published its first map, showcasing the West End's trail network.

  • Community Events: The John Brown Hill Climb and the Thunder Trails Bash brought the community together and promoted trail usage.

  • Paradox Trail Reroute Completion: The 18-mile reroute around Spradlin Park was completed, offering a more enjoyable and scenic trail experience.

Planning and Growth (2020-2022):

  • Community Engagement: Public meetings gathered input on proposed trail projects in the Sawtooth and Naturita Flattops areas.

  • Trail Planning Grant: WETA received a $45,000 grant from Colorado Parks and Wildlife to develop a comprehensive trail plan.
